Lest my foreign readers get the wrong idea: the image isn't a celebration of gun ownership. (I've never owned or fired a gun, unless you count BB guns.) The focus is on freedom as a universal value: even right-thinking aliens cherish it and are willing to defend it!

However, freedom requires the ability to defend itself. Hence I take the position that the two fundamental freedoms that keep us free are trial by jury, which acts as a check on unrestrained police power, and the right to bear arms, which is the check on unrestrained political power.
