Behold the trailer for "Dune":
Denis Villeneuve is directing this two-part saga, which may turn into a series of movies following the Dune novels. As I've said before, Villeneuve is the perfect director for this sort of film: he's comfortable with science fiction; he has a sense of the epic; he has a deft human touch when it comes to directing his actors, which leads to better-than-average characterization. I've enjoyed his previous efforts: "Arrival" and "Sicario" and "Blade Runner 2049," all of which showcase his love of a good story and his dedication to his craft. Villeneuve is on record as saying that "Dune" is his dream project: he's been fascinated by the novels since he was a kid. As I wrote in the "Blade Runner" review: Québecois director Denis Villeneuve has earned my trust. I'm expecting big things from "Dune"; this may be the one movie this year that tempts me to see it in an actual theater, just so I can experience its visual magnificence on the big screen. My fear, though, is that I'll be crestfallen at the very end when the words "To Be Continued" appear on the screen. I think Part 2 will be coming out sometime in 2021. I wish it would hurry up; I'm not getting any younger.
I just worry that there will be no part 2 if part 1 doesn't do very well at the box office. This is sort of a niche genre and there have been 2 sci-fi series in recent years that ended on "to be continued" as poor showings at the box office denied their conclusions.
ReplyDeleteI see that Part 2 hasn't even been green-lit, so I guess there's a chance we might not get a Part 2 (this makes me think of "The Golden Compass," which failed hard enough for the studio to recoil from any sequels). We'll just have to pray to the sandworms (or maybe to the Kwisatz Haderach) for success!
ReplyDeleteWhy didn't Villeneuve pull a Peter Jackson and make both movies as one big project? Is this no longer done?
Because he is no Peter Jackson working with a very well-known and beloved property, and both the first "Dune" and both "Blade Runners" were actually box office poison. But he still has enough industry juice to at least get half of it done. I sure hope it doesn't bomb as I would like to see a conclusion, but I've been burned before.
DeleteThere may be a bulge in my stillsult.
ReplyDeleteMike,
ReplyDeleteI couldn't help noticing that Chani (Zendaya) was sporting a codpiece on her stillsuit, just like the guys. Girl's got some balls, eh?
I did not notice. I suppose it might be cheaper to just do one style for everyone. I'll now have to watch it again.
