When I started watching DevourPower Shorts on YouTube, I liked them at first. What's not to like about a cute, young couple going around and playing the role of not-very-discriminating foodies? But after a few viewings, I began to notice a theme, and it wasn't a good theme. The more videos I watched with that theme in mind, the less appealing DevourPower became to me. Since these are YouTube Shorts, I can't embed them here—I'll simply provide the links and let you watch as many as you want or need to. After you've had your fill, so to speak, take a guess in the comments as to what thematic problem I was seeing, over and over again in these videos (hint: it has nothing to do with Rebecca's overdramatic facial expressions or her boobs... Rebecca's a fine woman).
Can you see the common thread that eventually became a turn-off for me? It should be pretty obvious even if you don't watch all seven of the linked videos.
I'm not a foodie, but I like boobs, so I watched all seven shorts. I'm not sure I picked up on the same theme you did, but it just felt like watching a commercial to me. There is no commentary or criticism, just a likely unrealistic portrayal of the food offerings. Ever get a Whopper that looks like the ones on TV?
ReplyDeleteThat's an interesting take, and certainly a valid one. I hadn't thought of that. What I'm turned off by is something simpler, and it appears in almost every one of their Shorts. Maybe I'll let one or two others take a whack at it before I say anything.
ReplyDeleteThe common thread to me, at least, is just how disgusting and unhealthy all that food and noxious sauces really are. I doubt they really eat it all, and the prices must be as gargantuan as all that greasy pepperoni. And where were the fresh vegetables and salads? Were these videos a ploy to kill off a certain segment of the world's population?
ReplyDeleteDaejeon John,
ReplyDeleteYou're close enough. The thing that started to revolt me after a few videos was the over-saucing. It seems that, in order for a resto's food to be considered "devour-worthy," it has to be absolutely drenched in sauce—and often, it's not just one sauce but several!
Did you see the one video where they took the pepperoni grease and incorporated it into a cream sauce, then spewed the hybrid sauce all over the pizza? Of course, as we who practice or flirt with keto know, dietary fat has no carbs and is not what "clogs your arteries."* Still, using pizza grease in that way is, to put it politely, gross.

*A plate of fettuccine Alfredo might be heart-clogging, but not because of the sauce: it's the pasta. Carbs, as much as I love them, are the Devil.
All the grease on the pepperoni alone was disgusting besides the additional grease in the sauce. I am not a sauce person, so these videos were just grotesque and unappealing to me.
