A YouTube "prankster" named Tanner Cook provokes someone, a DoorDash driver named Alan Colie, by following him around and shoving a cell phone in the victim's face while the phone plays noises. Colie tells Cook several times to stop, and he even swipes at the phone. Ultimately, Colie has enough. He turns around and shoots Cook in the chest (another source says stomach). Later, a Virginia jury finds Colie not guilty of the shooting by reason of self-defense, but guilty of illegally discharging a firearm within a building—a felony. As of September 29, Colie remains in jail. Icy Mike, in the video below, offers his credentials as former law enforcement and declares the jury to have been idiots, further saying the shooting was not, technically speaking, an act of self-defense.
One comment below the video said:
It was jury nullification. They didn’t want him doing time on the big charge so they found him guilty of one of the lesser [charges]. So they’re saying that what he did was wrong, but not wrong enough to get the punishment he’d have gotten for the big charge.
Icy Mike replied:
I hadn't thought of that possibility... probably because I defaulted to the jury being idiots. That's an interesting possibility.
Your thoughts? When my buddy Tom mentioned this incident to me, we both were pretty unsympathetic to the "prankster." Fuck around and find out, we agreed. In the video above, Icy Mike disagrees even though, he too, thinks Tanner Cook is a stupid asshole. Mike's disagreement is, as you can imagine, based on what he knows of the law. Mike might be technically and legally correct, but in my heart, I still have no sympathy for Cook, who in my opinion deserved what he got and is lucky to be alive.
Watching the clip made me harken back to the days of the old West (or at least how those times are portrayed in movies). You fuck around with the wrong guy (cheat at cards, make disparaging comments, flirt with the wrong girl, etc.), and the next thing you know, you are dead on the floor.
ReplyDeleteThis guy is lucky he survived. Do I think the shooting was justified? Not really. I say pull the gun, point it at his head, and say, "Back the fuck off or die!". Duty to warn and all that.
