Jellicle ball

Disparu has an amazing rundown of often-ridiculous self-contradictions and prejudicial acts committed by people involved with "The Rings of Power." The point he makes near the end is one worth remembering: if the idiots behind this project had simply approached Tolkien via some solid, self-consistent principles instead of merely spouting whatever nonsense they thought would get them through the next interview, they would have produced a much better adaptation (or whatever this is supposed to be). It's quite obvious that people didn't think through what they were doing, and that respecting Tolkien was nowhere near a top priority.

Also brutal: the things Disparu says about how insulted the Irish are by the show, and how the showrunners seem to want to have their cake and eat it, too. To wit: on the one hand, they want the show to be "a reflection of the real world," but on the other hand, they want people to understand that this is a fantasy disconnected from the real world. This leads to the inevitable conclusion that, according to the showrunners, the insulting Irish stereotypes in the show (Harfoots: "hungry simpletons with stage-Irish accents") both are and aren't a reflection of the real world. Yeah—figure that one out.
