I went to the real-estate office in my building, today, to ask about making a private rental contract. My assumption is that I've been off contract with the company since December 31, and if I don't get a rental contract soon, I could end up being booted out. But the truth is that I probably could have said nothing and squeezed a couple extra months out of the company. Not being that devious, I went to the office.
And got nothing done. After explaining my situation to the two ladies in the office, both of whom stared beadily at me like school-office workers in a John Hughes film, one lady finally said that I first needed to contact my company's HR department, have them confirm my intention to make my own contract, then pay the rental deposit (W10 million). The lady then loudly asked whether I'd been dieting, and I simply nodded yes, not wanting to tell the long, full story. "Looks good!" she declared. "But I still need to do more," I replied. "Only a little more," she replied. While her comment was reassuring (once one gets past the uncomfortable fact of a stranger talking about one's body), I know I could easily lose another 40 pounds.
So I went back to my place and wrote an email to HR. (The lady who'd talked less actually tried calling HR, but she got no answer. I'm pretty sure that's because HR staffers, like me, come in late and work late.) An hour or so after I'd left the real-estate office, in the early afternoon, I got a reply from HR saying they would talk to the real-estate people and arrange everything, and that we could talk about the arrangement after lunar year, i.e., sometime in early February. I hope it goes smoothly.
And that's where we stand. I had naively thought this would just be a matter of going down to the real-estate office and hammering out a contract since they'd already know my employment contract was up, but as Murphy's Law and Korean nonlinearity would have it, the real-estate office had no awareness of my situation and was more interested in my body-fat percentage. So for now, it's to be continued until very early February.
