an interesting take on Frodo's "failure" at Mount Doom

Tolkien's take, in a letter he wrote, seems to be that, on a superficial/technical level, Frodo's failure to cast the One Ring into the fire at Mount Doom was indeed just that—a failure. However, Tolkien goes on to argue that we, as finite creatures with only a limited ability to endure suffering, can be expected to do only so much, so Frodo can't be faulted for having limits given how much he'd suffered. In Frodo's case, "Providence"—in the form of Gollum—is what carried the Ring into the fiery pit. Previous discussion here.
