Mike Pompeo, Secretary of State under Donald Trump, recently declared that the US ought to officially recognize Taiwan as an independent, sovereign state (see here).
While I agree in principle with Pompeo's sentiments, now might not be the right time to force China's hand on this matter, given how much attention and energy are being devoted to the Russia-Ukraine situation—a situation that China is monitoring carefully. China might take Pompeo's statement as fightin' words and decide the time to invade Taiwan has finally come.
While I don't think China's naval fleet is capable of launching the sort of overwhelming assault that would be necessary to conquer and annex Taiwan in a short time, I do suspect that, should China make the effort, the attack would end up being long and bloody.
Would the US step in, at that point, and come to Taiwan's aid? Well, that's the million-dollar question, isn't it. We're not overtly aiding Ukraine right now; Ukraine isn't a NATO partner, and as far as I know, the US has no formal military alliances with Ukraine, so all we're doing, now, is expressing our sympathy and shipping weapons to the embattled country, as many nations in Europe are doing.
In my fantasies, I'd like to think the US would definitely come to Taiwan's aid, militarily, should China try to invade. But in reality, especially with a cowardly turd like Biden in office, I don't see that happening. The US is sorely lacking a backbone at this moment in its history.
