stat shenanigans? (redux)

My stats for August 31 suddenly jumped up during the night. I ended August with 597 unique visits on the final day, which is about normal. Either there was some glitch in tallying my numbers (and once the glitch had been dealt with, everything returned to normal), or there was some weird throttling going on, which means the same nonsense could happen again.

I talk about my stats on occasion, especially when there are significant peaks or troughs, but generally speaking, I don't define my blogging existence by them. Yeah—talk about "just a number": site stats are just a number! Meanwhile, I appreciate my five loyal readers (and of those five, I can name only two or three).

  1. Generally, when something seems weird, I try to assume a glitch or some other unintentional factor rather than malice. Granted, there is malice out there, so you're not always going to be right, but it is a much less stressful way to live. I've got enough stress in my life as it is.

  2. I guess we'll see whether the problem returns. If it does, I'll be not inclined to malice them to stupidity, the famous proverb notwithstanding.

  3. It still seems strange to me that my default search engine, Yahoo, doesn't find your blog, at least not directly.

A "Big Hominid" search brings results for links to your blog from Zen Kimchi, but not the blog itself.

Similarly, "Hairy Chasms" results in links to reviews of your book by that name. The first blog hit is my blog linking to one of your posts.

"Big Hominid's Hairy Chasms" brings a bunch of Pinterest links to some of your posts but nothing for the actual home page.

Very weird. Maybe I'm doing something wrong.

  4. Help! I'm bein' repressed!

That is strange, John. I doubt you're doing anything wrong.
