Why Matt Walsh is now against tipping:
I haven't watched the tipping video yet, but it is an issue here in ways that differ from my time in the States. Amongst the expat community, there are several groups that come from a non-tipping culture. They hate the way we Americans "spoil" the help with our tips. The folks I tip always appreciate it, but tipping is not expected from most servers and you won't be ostracized if you don't leave money in the tray.
ReplyDeleteI've evolved my tipping habits since moving here, going from a standard 15 to 20 percenter to being more of a situational tipper nowadays. My standard is closer to 10%, but I go higher or lower as circumstances warrant. The significant factor for me is whether I can tip my server directly or if all tips must go into the community jar to be shared with all the staff. When I learned that some businesses take a cut of that money, I stopped contributing to the pot. So, if the gal is allowed to take direct tips, I'll poke it in her cleavage or pocket. If not, I'll leave some coins on the tray, and that's it.
