The boss couldn't come in today because of car trouble (he had to have his SUV towed; given the frequency of these repairs, I'm pretty sure the cause is his speed-demon ways as he ruins his shit car's engine again and again... it's a Dodge, for Chrissakes... who buys a Dodge?), so I told him over the phone that this week would be my final week in the office. Having had time to think about my situation, I'm not waiting until the end of the month.
The boss counterargued that there's a good chance we'll get paid for the work we do this month (which I doubt), that we'll end up with at least another six-month contract, and that companies rarely do anything between solar and lunar new year (January 29 this year—Year of the Snake). If he's implying that the CEO isn't responding to him because this is the yearly lull, well... I don't buy that.
The boss accuses me of "thinking like a foreigner" about the situation and says he understands how people in this company think which, if true, means he ought to know why no one has been responding to his daily entreaties, so why bother with the daily calls and emails?
Personally, I don't want to work where I'm both unpaid and unwelcome, so I'll give my boss the courtesy of a final week, then clear out over the coming weekend. (If we get a contract by this Friday, I'll stay.) And even if the boss suddenly conjures up a miraculous six-month contract right after I leave, I'm not going to go back. Sure, I'll wait for the boss to create his new company, long promised but never fulfilled. Joining that company had been the original plan. In the meantime, I'll acquire my new skills, get on Squarespace, start monetizing myself, and aim at the long-cherished goal of becoming my own boss.
UPDATE: I am now signed up for Skillshare at a beginning-of-year rebate price, good for one year. 20% discount and access to all Skillshare courses. Next year at around this time, I'll renew and start paying full price. Hopefully, though, I'll have learned all I need to know by then, so I can just drop the subscription. Next up: register for Master Class and Adobe Creative Cloud (to use InDesign).
UPDATE 2: I'm now signed up for Master Class. Teachers look like a bunch of woke people from Hollywood and the leftie media, but what do you expect, right?
UPDATE 3: I can't seem to sign up for Adobe Creative Cloud: the payment window doesn't seem to have South Korea (or "Korea, South" or "Republic of Korea" or "ROK") as a country to select on the "select country" menu. If anyone knows a workaround, please let me know.
Looks like your course is set on the road to the future. Good luck with wherever it leads you!
ReplyDeleteYou've made the tough choice, but probably the right one. Good luck with the journey ahead.
