It took a while, I remember, to come down from the afterglow of seeing the movie in 1999. We'd all been starved for more Star Wars stories, and it hadn't sunk in just how bad "The Phantom Menace" was. But much later, the sequel trilogy showed us that it could all be so, so much worse.
