but why?

I'm not a fan of displaying the Ten Commandments in courtrooms, and I'm sure as hell not a fan of displaying them in schools. Donald Trump apparently is. Headline:

Trump backs displaying Ten Commandments in public schools
"BRING BACK TTC!!! MAGA2024" former President Donald Trump wrote on TRUTH Social.

Presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump on Friday expressed support for displaying the Ten Commandments in public schools and other educational venues.

The Ten Commandments are a set of religious dictates recognized in Judaism and Christianity. The Biblical account asserts that they were given to Moses by God at Mt. Sinai.

"I LOVE THE TEN COMMANDMENTS IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS, PRIVATE SCHOOLS, AND MANY OTHER PLACES, FOR THAT MATTER. READ IT — HOW CAN WE, AS A NATION, GO WRONG???" Trump wrote on TRUTH Social.

Louisiana GOP Gov. Jeff Landry earlier this week signed a bill into law requiring the display of the 10 Commandments in public-school classrooms. The legislation requires that they be displayed in “large, easily readable font," according to The Associated Press.

Trump suggested that the move could push the nation towards a religious revival.

"THIS MAY BE, IN FACT, THE FIRST MAJOR STEP IN THE REVIVAL OF RELIGION, WHICH IS DESPERATELY NEEDED, IN OUR COUNTRY. BRING BACK TTC!!! MAGA2024," he concluded.

Why, Don? If we're talking state-run schools, we should keep church and state separate. Religious private schools, hospitals, etc. can do what they want. Public spaces should either be kept totally religion-free, or they should allow all religions to express themselves.

This sounds like an attempt to pander to the more religious elements of the right. Trump could better spend his time doing more to secure the black and Hispanic vote. I like what he's done in that arena so far, but this stuff about the Ten Commandments is a nonsensical side show that will turn off moderates who were leaning his way. What's more, Trump himself isn't that religious of a person, especially with the Stormy Daniels millstone around his neck. The words "Trump" and "piety" don't belong in the same sentence.
