weight loss

Click on the following graph to enlarge the image. The graph charts my progress from June of 2013—before I moved back to Korea—to September 2014, i.e., this very month.

As I've said before, I started off very fat, so there's really no visible difference on my frame, despite the loss of 15 kilograms, or over 30 pounds. Overweight is overweight. It won't be until I lose another thirty kilos that I'll finally start to look thinner. By then, I'll be down to where I was in 1989, back when I was a college junior, hiking every day in Switzerland.

The huge gap in the middle of the graph roughly corresponds to the months during which I was suffering from hip pain.

I'm really envious of your motivation and success. Perhaps you'll be my inspiration to rededicate myself to diet and exercise. I think a key factor is that you actually enjoy your exercise routine, so it's not so much a chore (although I know it's still hard work). Anyway, good job!

John,

Thanks for the kind and encouraging words. I was blessed with a liking for hiking, which is why, during my sedentary "fat period," I often asked myself why the hell I wasn't out there walking. It's not as though there's a shortage of mountains in Korea.

I've reached a point where it's becoming harder to want to ingest bad-for-you foods. I'm actually starting to feel a mite guilty about stuffing pizza and other carbs into myself, although I don't feel quite guilty enough to have cut the bad things completely out of my diet. In fact, a rebellious part of my mind keeps asserting that, since I'm losing weight without having changed my diet all that much, there's no real reason for me to change my diet at all. But I know, intellectually, that that's nonsense: ultimately, I'm going to have to start eating healthier so that my dietary habits aren't working against my exercise habits.

Good luck with your own efforts; for a long time, I was envying you! And from what I gather, you really haven't fallen that far off the wagon; it won't take much for you to get back on track.

Omigod, Kevin - you're headed for an encounter with nothingness!
