The Movie Cynic takes on "The Rings of Power"

Another painful dissection while I wait for Part 2 of Nerd Cookies's analysis:

One argument put forth in the above video is something I've heard elsewhere, from a lot of different sources: "The Rings of Power" is basically just fan fiction. Another problem discussed in the video is Morfydd Clark's utterly wooden acting in the role of Galadriel, a character who apparently comes off as an unpleasant bitch and Mary Sue: she's right when everyone thinks she's wrong; she's unbeatable in combat, and she's deadly serious in demeanor (a far cry from Cate Blanchett's performance, in which Blanchett's Galadriel was, at times, capable of an impish look and a sly smile). Another problem I've heard before is that the new series trades on the nostalgia factor for something resembling the Peter Jackson films (which, Tolkien purists will remind you, had their own narrative flaws), but it comes off as a cheap imitation. Yet another problem is something so egregious that even American critics are noticing it: the Harfoots (hobbits, essentially) have horribly inconsistent accents that range from some twisted form of Irish to good ol' Amurrican.

In all, this was a simultaneously painful and entertaining watch. I hope the showrunners seriously consider ending the series after only two seasons instead of the planned five. How much agony do these clueless bastards really hope to inflict on the people? I'm trying and failing to imagine a shitstorm that lasts for five whole seasons.
