With its 5.56 mm cartridge, which is not even .22 caliber (0.2189"), the AR-15 is something of a pea shooter. Its dangerous reputation probably comes from the velocity of its bullets: increased velocity = increased kinetic energy. Muzzle velocity varies from 2500 fps to 3100 fps depending on barrel length, and effective range varies accordingly: from 200 yards to 600 yards (source). Bullets range from 69 to 77 grains for most AR-15s, which again is pea-shooter sized. But if even a small bullet hits you at a couple thousand feet per second, I guess it can still do a significant amount of damage.
And yes: the left doesn't know how to reckon with an AR-15. Dumbasses still think "AR" means "assault rifle" (its actually Armalite Rifle—the company name), and they do seem to vacillate between "it's a deadly, military-grade assault rifle" to "it's of no use if you find yourself battling the government." Choose one option and stick with it, dickheads.
