I was very interested to hear Styx's take on Larry Elder's having thrown his hat into the ring. My own thoughts are here. In a nutshell, Styx thinks Larry Elder will add an interesting perspective and make cogent points as he runs, but in the end, Elder won't rise above the single digits in polling—a bit like Nikki Haley, at least in terms of statistics. Unlike me, Styx sees these "hopeless" candidates (Nikki Haley, Chris Christie, Vivek Ramaswamy, Mike Pence, etc.) as running not so much for the presidency, but more for something like either the vice presidency or some Cabinet position. Yeah, that's conceivable. And as Styx notes, Elder is already an author and media personality, so he already has fallback activities for when he fails his presidential run. I still think Elder shouldn't be running. It's a waste of time.
I didn't realize Elder is currently 70. He strikes me as much younger, more vigorous, and way more mentally acute than your typical 70-year-old, a trait he shares with the titanic Thomas Sowell. Elder can debate circles around pretty much anyone. Three years ago, I linked to a confrontation between Elder and Bill Maher, in which Maher essentially ran away like a little bitch. It was sad and hilarious. Maher should go through a few hundred more of those cleansing fires to purge the leftism from his soul. Anyway, here's Styx:
More and more, Maher appears to be seeing the light, even to the point of calling out the extremists on the left. Or maybe the libs have gone so far left that Maher now appears to be a moderate. One of those.
ReplyDeleteI still think Maher falls into the "broken clock right twice a day" category. Choice (b), the libs going too far left, is more likely to me.
