It's been a month, so I went back to the doc for another checkup this morning. Blood sugar results: the finger-prick test put me at an astounding 100, which is easily the lowest blood-sugar total I've ever had. (And I thought 115 was awesome a month ago!) My HbA1c is down from 9.4 to 8.5, which indicates a positive trend. The doc wants me down around 7.0, which is still high for normies, but good for us diabetics. My blood pressure is still high, but it's a bit lower than it had been last month. The doc recommends a better diet, more exercise, and the continued faithful consumption of my meds (i.e., don't skip out for weeks or months like last time). He prescribed two months' worth of meds, so I wished him a happy new year since I wouldn't be seeing him again until January.
I'm very happy about the 100. That's the high end of normal for normies.
Great news overall. Are you still walking every day? I'm just curious how an already active guy like you is supposed to get more exercise.
ReplyDeleteGreat news! I'm guessing this year's walk played a critical role in getting it that low!
ReplyDeleteJohn Mac,
ReplyDeleteWhen I got back from Busan, I spent a few weeks just resting. I was all "walked out," if you will, so I wasn't really motivated to do any distance walking once I was back home. As a result, I've regained a few kilos (not all 12.5 that I lost, thank God), and I only just restarted a walking routine over the past week: Monday, Wednesday, Friday, out to Jamshil Bridge and back for about 21,000 steps and 1500 calories burned. I'm thinking of putting the backpack back on so I can burn more calories per outing—probably about 20% more. On my off days, I'll do staircase work inside my apartment building, probably going twice up the stairs from the B1 level to my floor (14th). That'll be great for cardio, and it ought to lower my blood pressure and reduce my resting heart rate. So the stairs will be a Tuesday-Thursday-Saturday thing, with Sunday being a day of rest (and maybe dietary self-indulgence... gotta have at least one cheat day!).
Daniel,
Yes, I think so. My A1c results at the end of October were very high at 9.4, but that's a three-month average for the Aug/Sep/Oct period. I suspect that October was super-low since I was doing my walk at the time; otherwise, my A1c would have been much higher than 9.4. I'm at 8.5 this month, which is the Sep/Oct/Nov average; no doubt the walk had a lot to do with the lower A1c number. It may also have helped with the finger-prick test.
