the importance of being optimistic

Good video on the importance of not becoming black-pilled:

Aside: the video makes a point about The Lord of the Rings that I agree with. Three years ago, I half-jokingly talked about how Frodo ultimately failed to do what was necessary to destroy the Ring of Power: it was Gollum who inadvertently ended up destroying the Ring. But in the larger picture, per the video above, it's really Sam's faith that there is good in the world that drives the plot to its happy-but-bittersweet conclusion. Fucking Frodo.

  1. Dude, don't start getting down on my boy Frodo. He did what no one else could have done by getting the ring as far as he did. Tolkien's point, I believe, was that nobody could have willingly destroyed the ring, and it was only through the grace of the Valar, the help of Frodo's friends, and Bilbo's purity of heart ("The pity of Bilbo may rule the fate of many") that good triumphed. Good does not triumph because we are infallible; good triumphs in spite of our failings because people are willing to sacrifice for it.

That being said, I will not argue with the idea that Samwise was perhaps the true hero of the trilogy. I don't believe you can single out any one individual as "the hero," but if it had to be one person, it would be Sam.
