Saw this on Instapundit regarding Queen Elizabeth II:
Queen Elizabeth II got her respect the old fashioned way — she earned it.
The reason I have so much regard for her is that, put in one of the most visible positions on the planet, she did NOT make it about her — she made it about her country, her people and her duty.
I’m sure she was royally pissed (to coin a phrase) and wanted to intervene in several instances, but she was smart enough to realize that the minute she got political was the minute she lost the respect of both sides, and she would be toppled. She recognized that the monarchy is the unifying symbol of the Brits and made it clear that she would represent everyone, not just the faction in power.
William is smart enough and tempered enough to continue that. I have been hopeful that Charles seems to be improving with age from the vacuous twit he was before, but we may be in for some rough seas now.
