Do you do your own artwork? It looks similar to that of Daniel Johnston, the bipolar musician and artist. There is a great documentary about this unique musician/artist/tortured soul and his fight with god and the devil--"The Devil and Daniel Johnston." Really a great look into the lives that so many people actually lead in dealing with mental illness and trying to survive in a world that doesn't have a place for them.
I still can't get over how similar your styles of art are.
Uh... thanks, I think. Alas, I don't know Johnston.
I'd say my two biggest influences are Matt Groening and Frank Miller. With a touch of Berke Breathed. What I aspire to, but will never reach, is Bill Watterson. That guy is God.
Kevin
PS: Yes, that's all my artwork (including the calligraphic "bok" character) except for the typed portion in hangeul and, obviously, the typed portion in romaja.
What? You don't do your own typefaces? I'm shattered.
Great graphic, though. I can definitely see the Breathed. I don't know what it is--I can't say that it looks like Breathed, but it definitely has a Breathed feel or mood. If I had to guess one influence, I would have picked Breathed before Groening and Miller. So maybe the "touch" is bigger than you think.
In a way you are influenced by Daniel Johnston as Matt Groening was, and is, influenced by him. Matt is part of the documentary, as are others who have been influenced artistically by Johnston.
If you doodle a lot, you might be able to sell your work for profit in the Austin, Texas scene. There are exhibitions of this type of art work all over the place. Don't know the going rates though as I am not a fan of anything more mind expanding than comic book art. I'll take Jack Kirby, John Romita, Rob Liefeld, and J. Scott Campbell (damn, he can really draw fine...um...breasts) over van Gogh, Cezanne, Monet, Picasso, Renoir, Warhol, etc. Could also be that I like a little story with my art work which is why I drop by your blog.
Happy New Year! I hope mine gets better than the ending of this last one. I wouldn't wish that on anyone.
One thing I really like about Breathed is, indeed, the mood. He's not afraid of drawing characters who appear to be teetering on the edge of insanity or some sort of breakdown. That's one thing I actually miss in Groening and Watterson, and it's something I try to capture in my own drawings.
John,
I hope 2008 is far less shitty than what you went through. That was pretty harrowing.
WHAT CORN AND PEANUTS ARE HIDDEN IN THE WARM AND STEAMING PILE? Vapid cultural commentary, pungent reviews, sundry Korea-related musings, fartological/scatological humor, political flatulence, and nondualistic Zen excretions in prose or poetry form.
