Ratzinger/Benedict XVI: 2 contrasting views

A Slate article here contends that Benedict's papacy is a legacy of objectives not met. The article goes surprisingly easy on the Pope.

Another Slate article from 2010, by the now-late Christopher Hitchens, on how the Pope's "entire career has the stench of evil about it." I'm glad Slate reposted this article, which most decidedly does not go easy on Ratzinger.

Good article by Hitchens.

Like you, I never liked Ratzinger/Benedict. I'm very pleased that he resigned. One writer, I forget who, said it was "an eruption of modernity" in the Vatican, and I agree. Benedict will be remembered most of all for his historic resignation, and possibly for a ridiculously funny GIF you made of him!

I just wish he hadn't stacked the College of Cardinals with extreme conservatives.
