Nichelle Nichols, famous for being the first to play the role of Uhura in the Star Trek franchise, has died at the age of 89. Nichols was a ground-breaking actress in her heyday, expanding TV and movie opportunities for black actors and actresses of her era and beyond. Nichols had repeatedly told the story of the encouragement she received from Martin Luther King, Jr., when she was contemplating leaving "Star Trek." King urged her to remain with the cast because of what she represented to black viewers unused to seeing a competent black female as part of the bridge crew of an important spacefaring vessel.
The role of Uhura generally improved over time, I think, and successive actresses have infused the character with a great deal more badassery and linguistic competence. But for me, Nichelle Nichols will always be the first and best Uhura, and it's sad to know she's now gone.
RIP, Ms. Nichols.
