I just spent ten hours at the office, working on proofreading one of our new textbooks, which will be published in November and used in December. I'm tired, I'm hungry, and for a while there, I was seriously considering giving up on walking Sunday and Monday (Monday is another national holiday: Hangeul Day). But I did what the French concierge advised me to do back when I was in Nice in 1989: flip a coin when you can't decide. These days, I call it "consulting the gods." I do three flips and go for two out of three. If the first two flips are the same coin face in a row, then the gods have spoken strongly about whether I should or shouldn't do a thing. If I need three flips to know what the gods have decided, then the gods have spoken, but not with conviction. That's what happened tonight when I got to my place: I got tails, heads, then heads again. Heads = walk, so I'm walking.
I have my new leather belt, which is nice and strong but needs a few extra holes punched into it, and I've got some stuff I need to transfer from the small backpack I used during Chuseok to the large, 85-liter Gregory that I'll be using during the big walk. Once I finish prep, it'll be around 1 a.m. I'll sleep until 5 and be out of my place by 5:30. Then again, it's only a 26K walk to Hanam, so I can afford to leave a bit later... but I like being out before sunrise and catching the sunrise en chemin. Up at 5, then. And I'll nap along the way if I'm tired.
One thing, though: I might not take pictures. I'm getting close to the real departure date for the big walk, and I'm trying to empty out my phone, not fill it up. Sorry to disappoint, but there'll be plenty of pics soon enough. Hang tight.
