Way I always heard it, the side that makes the least mistakes, wins the war.
This is why "Commas mark pauses" is a bad rule.

I would start by eliminating the comma between the subject and the predicate (one of my biggest pet peeves).
Zackly. I can forgive the first comma, which comes after a folksy introductory phrase, but that subject/predicate interruption in the main clause is impardonnable.
I'm staying out of this one--above my pay grade.
