Paint some butter on the bread, take it down to Florida, give it a chance to tan, and voilà:
I don't understand the science, but for whatever reason, the butter-and-broil treatment made the bread shrink. Weird. I'm just imagining protein strands curling up in pain from the raw heat of the broil. "It burns! It burns!"
And in other news: no Krispy Kreme. I waited outside for a cab for fifteen minutes, and the few cabs that did come by didn't have their "empty car" light on, so I gave up, realized I still have some apple-galette filling left over, and decided to make a galette or pie or something for dessert. So that's sorted, at least.
