BS in the martial arts

The following video talks about how MMA has proven to be a good laboratory for determining the relative effectiveness of various martial arts. In doing so, the video also delves into the history of all the BS associated with martial arts. A bit of context might be needed, though: plenty of fighting systems have deliberately incorporated nonsense as a way of fooling the masses into thinking that martial-art practitioners have mystical powers, thus heightening the spooky aura around these practitioners, creating a "better not fuck with me" vibe. On the practical level, such an aura creates interest in the populace, some of whom will take the step of entering a fighting school and becoming an acolyte. The other effect is to minimize the chances of getting into fights because, as a practitioner, you now have a reputation that precedes you. That said, there is indeed plenty of nonsense that even the practitioners themselves believe, but all it takes is one or more street encounters to begin to sort that out.
