I'm not sure I agree. I've lived in Switzerland.
Despite their horrible politics, I think I like the French better than the Swiss overall. The French are fun. The Swiss, with all of that Teutonic cultural influence, can be straitlaced and repressed (not all of them, of course), and there's a price to be paid for being the European country that prides itself on its clean and orderly environment. Switzerland might be "free" in some legal sense, but the Swiss themselves are captives of their own neuroses. Does this mean I think America and Americans are freer? Not at all. My people are in a rut right now, and are pretty fucked up. And I don't see any improvement on the horizon.
