That does look good! Haven't made that flatbread in a while myself.
ReplyDeleteMike took a pic of the printed recipe from off the fridge.
ReplyDeleteWhat's the difference between flatbread and a wrap or tortilla?
ReplyDeleteI'm not an expert on these things, but at a guess, the terms "flatbread" and "wrap" are fairly generic categories that quickly subdivide into subcategories. A flatbread is NOT a wrap if it can't be rolled around a filling, and there are some flatbreads that are too stiff to be used as wraps; they're better suited for pizza-like dishes. In fact, certain kinds of naan or pita, depending on how they're prepared, are unsuitable for wrap sandwiches. (Pitas that aren't rollable, for example, can be sliced open and used as pocket breads.)
ReplyDeleteA tortilla is a culturally specific type of flatbread, usually made of corn or wheat flour. It's often thin enough to qualify as a wrap for American-style wrap sandwiches. When it's just folded around Mexican or Tex-Mex ingredients, it can be part of a taco or a quesadilla.
So: tortilla is a subcategory of flatbread that can be used as a wrap for a wrap sandwich, or as the "walls" of a taco or quesadilla. The terms "flatbread" and "wrap" are higher-level categories of bread.
At a guess, I'd say "flatbread" refers more to shape while "wrap" refers more to function. (And not all flatbreads are completely flat, either!)
Supercategory: bread
Category: flatbread (as seen by shape)
Overlapping category: wrap (as seen by function)
Subcategory: tortilla (both a wrap and a flatbread)
Some might disagree with the above analysis, but that's the best I can do on short notice.
Wow! I'm impressed with this thorough analysis. It is good to know that flatbread is a bit more generic in terminology allowing it to also be a wrap. Of course, tortilla is similar I suppose, but I'd never think of that term for a gyro or a shawarma. Only Mexican ingredients need apply!
DeleteIt occurs to me that some might say all wraps are flatbreads, but not all flatbreads are wraps. If that's the case, the categorization might look like this:
DeleteSupercategory: bread
Category: flatbread (as seen by shape)
Subcategory: wrap (as seen by function)
Sub-subcategory: tortilla (both a wrap and a flatbread)
Yeah, that sums it up nicely...
