Actress Kirstie Alley, my crush from "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan," has died of cancer at the age of 71. News outlets are saying her battle with the disease was "brief." Her cancer had only recently been discovered.
I remember Alley best for her role as Saavik in "Star Trek II," a half-Vulcan, half-Romulan protégée of Mr. Spock. Alley was slim and fetchingly sexy back then. Later in life, she battled with weight issues but showed off her comic chops on TV shows like "Cheers." I didn't follow her post-"Cheers" career, and I guess I've kept a memory of her from 1982 in my head all this time. I didn't even realize she was 71.
RIP, Kirstie.
ADDENDUM: Wikipedia offers a weird bit of trivia: Alley voted for Donald Trump in 2016 and 2020. She had been openly supportive of Trump for much of 2016, but she retracted her public support for him in October of that year. Despite the retraction of public support, she still quietly voted for Trump. Frankly, I did not expect that.
