I decided to turn back after walking 18 kilometers. I'd been wearing my new shoes, and they were fine for the first hour or so of the walk, after which they started to feel tight, especially around the toes. For most of the rest of the walk, I experienced a dull ache, but things got painful over the last two or three kilometers, so once again, I chose discretion over valor and decided just to head back to my place.
Now that I'm back in my apartment, I had a look at my pinky toes, and they've been pretty badly abraded. This is going to hurt tomorrow.
It could be that these shoes simply need to be broken in. I've loosened the laces—again—and I'll try wearing them for a short walk on Tuesday. If the cause is hopeless, I'll look online and see if I can order the exact same pair of shoes I got last time. They might no longer be in stock; shoes get updated all the time.
Had I worn my regular shoes, I think I'd have been able to walk the whole 35K, no problems. But I decided to give my new shoes a dry run, and I'm sort of glad I did, despite the pain.
Made the right move by calling it a day. Always want to protect your feet. My guess would be that the new shoes just need to be worn in over time during short jaunts.
