damning with faint praise

I like Geraldine Ferraro's spirit. She went through the grinder as Fritz Mondale's running mate back in the 80s. Now, she has thrown herself behind Hillary Clinton's campaign and has promised to help Clinton combat what she (Ferraro) sees as potential Republican "smears and dirty tricks." Good for her, I say!

But at one point in the article I was reading, Ferraro's sentiments regarding Bill Clinton struck me as... not exactly a glowing endorsement of the man.

Miss Ferraro, however, insisted that she believed the former president's philandering ways were behind him. "He is as keen for [Hillary to] win this as she is," she said. "He's not going to do anything that might endanger her campaign."

I think Ferraro is well within her rights to display, however politely, some caution about Wild Bill. He's over 60 now, but might still be a frisky critter waiting to stab some unsuspecting youngling with a cigar, befouling the Jedi Temple yet again.
