the Genesius Times on the Kevin McCarthy vote

After fifteen rounds of voting, Republican Kevin McCarthy was finally elected Speaker of the House of Representatives. Apparently, this kind of snag hasn't happened in a century. The unending rounds of voting and revoting led to bitter, mocking commentary on both sides of the aisle. The Democrats mocked what is actually a perfectly proper democratic process; the Republicans, divided as usual between the Dubya-era neocons on one side and the MAGA conservatives on the other, fought over the degree to which McCarthy was just a RINO (Republican In Name Only), with most of the MAGA crowd thinking McCarthy would be bad news for Congress. Too late now: McCarthy has the votes.

Here's the satirical Genesius Times on the issue:

BREAKING: McCarthy wins Speaker vote after finding 150,000 mail-in ballots at 2 a.m.

WASHINGTON, DC—In a shocking turn of events, the House of Representatives have voted in Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) after finding 150,000 mail-in ballots from House members at 2 a.m. this morning.

The votes were all absentee ballots cast by sitting members of Congress although their signatures have not been verified.

“A batch of about 150,000 absentee votes is what came in from the House at 2 a.m. when everyone was asleep. That’s just the final tally, and when it arrived,” said Hugh Janus, public information manager at the House.

Conspiracy theorists have immediately claimed that the 150,000 House votes are somehow not legitimate.

“People will try to come up with various theories to make them feel better, but the truth of the matter is that McCarthy is the rightful Speaker of the House,” Janus said. “There’s just no overcoming that many votes.”

Officials in the state told Genesius Times that there is “no truth to the claim” that any votes were mysteriously “found” for McCarthy in the 150,000.

McCarthy has said some things I actually like, but the MAGA crowd hates him. Styx lists a few reasons why in this video:

Granted, just because a politician says something you like, that's no reason to trust the guy. All politicians say what the people want to hear. None of us knows how McCarthy will acquit himself as speaker, but we're all going to find out soon enough. (He was backed by Trump, much to the confusion and consternation of the MAGA crowd.)

Hugh Janus. Nice.
