could this be good news?

I'm kicking myself for not having taken a picture, so I'm afraid you're stuck having to learn this story via my humble prose. Last night, before going to bed, I made the random decision to bandage up my toe with a single, simple bandage—not the usual, heavy-duty nonsense. I woke up this morning, and as has become the ritual since last October, the first thing I did was to look at my right big toe for signs of leakage in the bandage. Over the past month, the leakage has dwindled to a mere dot or splotch representing, at most, only a few drops of blood or fluid escaping over the course of a few hours. Well... today, when I looked at the toe bandage's exterior, I saw nothing. Intrigued and a little afraid, I gingerly peeled the bandage off my toe, fully expecting to see a wan little bit of leakage in the bandage's absorbent pad.

Nothing.

I don't know what this means, to be honest. I'm pretty sure it doesn't mean that I'm completely healed. It does, however, mean that I've finally had my first night, since this whole mess began, without any leakage whatsoever. What's doubly perplexing is that this reduction in leakage is happening a few days after I made the risky decision to clip away a lot of the callus that had built up around the toe wound. The night I did that clipping, I was worried that I'd discover the true size of the wound, and that it'd be a lot wider than I'd thought. As it turns out, the actual wound is pretty small now, and the clipping I did was apparently beneficial, allowing the wound to heal "flatter," so to speak, instead of becoming a cavernous divot that gets closed off at the top, i.e., not really healing at all.

Something to remember as well: I checked my bandage after a night's sleep, i.e., I'd been off my feet for several hours. Earlier in the evening around 9 p.m., when I'd changed from the day's big bandages to the night's single, regular bandage, there'd been some leakage, which is normal for where I am now in the healing process. Tentative conclusion: any amount of walking is still likely to produce leakage. More optimistically, though, a night without any leakage is a first: even after sleeping, after being off my feet for several hours, I normally see some amount of leakage through my bandage every morning. To see none is nothing short of revolutionary. Here's hoping I've reached a point where "leakless nights" become more common. And then, I can hope, I'll start having "leakless days." Several leakless days in a row, and I'll cautiously pronounce myself healed.

So my prediction of being totally healed by some time in July might prove true.

Fingers and tentacles crossed.

  1. Congrats. Think you can consider yourself 95%+ healed. If all goes well, hope to hear of some plans for distance walking this autumn.

  2. Thanks, Daniel. Ironically, I'm probably going to celebrate my recovery by doing something very unhealthy (buffet!), but after that, I want to start a creek-walking campaign that gets my ass out of the apartment in the early morning, before the sun gets too nasty. I also want to get back to doing long walks on Saturdays, and I've even found a new route along the extreme west of the Han that I want to try. I don't know whether you saw this post, but I've already written that, healed or not, I'll be doing the Four Rivers trail again this year. I've been away from it for a couple of years, and I miss it badly.

    1. Buffets are my favorite vice as well. Have you been to the Riverside Hotel's The Garden Buffet? Close to the Chosun/Lotte in quality at a third of the price. They have an entire gelato freezer with 10 different flavors, pulled pork and lamb chops, several types of curry, and an entire bakery's worth of cakes that you can try by the slice, all inclusive. Creek walking is where it's at in Seoul. Even though I live literally 500 meters away from the 중랑천 (the northern alter ego tributary of the 탄천, I believe), I rarely make it out more than once a month. How far west of the Han are we talking here? Somewhere in Incheon? Remember you mentioning taming the Four Rivers again in 2023 and happy to hear that you're staying the course (pun intended).

  4. Daniel,

Is this video for "The Garden Kitchen" showing the place you have in mind? (Naver Map shows 더 리버사이드 호텔 뷔페 더가든키친.)

For the new trail... how far west? I'm looking at a route that starts at 가양역, goes out to the river, turns left and west, then goes about 20 km to 운양역. This means not turning to follow the 아라뱃길 but instead continuing along the Han. Things look a little sparse out that way, but a quiet, 20K walk could be just the thing. I'd be doing it in the evening/at night, though, since it's summer. I might do it during the day once the weather cools back down.

Gayang Station is familiar to me from God-knows-how-many walks I've done where I've stopped in that area. It's almost exactly halfway between where I live and my usual stopping point in Incheon.

    1. Yes, that's the place. Looks a wee bit smaller and less gastronomic epiphany-inducing than my last visit back in 2018 but the dessert section, variety of meats and sheer number of choices has etched itself permanently in my memory. (Although, if money is no object, you can't beat the Lotte Hotel buffet La Seine at 을지로입구역 downtown.) So, the far west trail sounds like it starts in Incheon and then meanders its way back to Gimpo?

  5. Daniel,

If I start out at 가양역, I'll technically be in western Seoul (강서구). It looks as though 운양역 is in Gimpo, so I guess I'll end up in a part of Gimpo that I'm totally unfamiliar with. Cool. I see there's a huge park there called 모담공원, and another, even huger park that's an ecological sanctuary for wild birds. Also cool. There's something called a "sports mall" in the area as well, so it looks as though there's plenty to see and do... although realistically, I'll be tired after a 21-22K walk, and I'll probably just train home. But I might grab a meal first.

  6. I'd sleep better if I could ever have a leakless night...

It does sound like this is a big milestone in the healing of your toe. Now to get the broken/not broken one squared away...
