Populist movements in the US, Italy, and elsewhere at least have some traction even if they're not across-the-board victorious all the time. In the clip below (from a much longer interview), the Triggernometry crew talks with Matt Goodwin, professor in the field of politics, about recent failures in British conservatism. I found, though, that some of the points he makes about how UK conservatives have failed to seize on certain opportunities afforded by resurgent populism are just as true in the US; we're not as different as all that. The GOP is cynically known for constantly snatching defeat from the jaws of victory to the extent that it's a bitter running joke. When people call the GOP "the Stupid Party," it's normally conservatives who are using that language, not liberals/leftists.
