track ballast

Sometimes, there are questions in your mind that are buried so deep you don't even realize they're there. When I heard the question, "What are those stones you see under railroad tracks?", I knew that that was one of those questions. Turns out, according to the video below, that those stones are called track ballast, and more or less the same kind of track ballast is used the world over. But why? Watch the video and be enlightened.
