I think I've mentioned before that one of the things that surprised me when I moved here is that gay and trans folk are accepted in the community at large without shame or ridicule. You can be out and proud, and no one is going to care one way or the other.
That said, I have witnessed some discrimination here. A bar that hires a transgender waitress gets blacklisted and boycotted by a large segment of the expat/foreigner community. I personally don't care, but these guys are adamant about not patronizing any bar with a "ladyboy" on staff. I guess they are afraid they'll get drunk and wake up next to a girl with something extra.
