May Day

Today is May First, i.e., May Day. The day has ancient roots if we're talking about the pagan celebration which, as Wikipedia notes, comes about halfway between the vernal equinox and the summer solstice (anyone else notice we had a relatively cool April this year?). In more modern times, May Day has also been associated with workers:

In 1889, 1 May was chosen as the date for International Workers' Day by the Second International, to commemorate the Haymarket affair in Chicago and the struggle for an eight-hour working day. As a result, International Workers' Day is also called "May Day," but the two are otherwise unrelated.

So revel in your paganness or agitate for all workers to unite. Your choice.
