I get into the office a bit before lunchtime these days, and today, when I got here, the first thing I saw was that the office was dark, and the delivered newspapers were still folded up and stuck in the office front door's handle. Nobody home. Today, I was the first one in the office. And as of this writing, there's still no one else here.
But am I the clueless one? Yesterday, March 1, was a national holiday celebrating the March First Independence Movement. And in recent years, the Korean government has taken to doing the American thing and "connecting the dots" with the nearest weekend* whenever a weekday holiday is separated from a weekend by at least a day... but a Wednesday holiday, which is exactly midweek (German "Wednesday" = Mittwoch, or "midweek") doesn't usually get extended into a five-day weekend. So, I'm left to wonder whether I missed a memo. Wouldn't surprise me if I had: foreigners are usually the last to know when a company-wide memo is sent out about some holiday or event.
Guess I'll just enjoy the blessed silence while it lasts.

*For example, Thanksgiving is a Thursday holiday, so most places in the US will also give Friday as a day off so people can enjoy a long weekend. Friday "connects the dots" between Thursday and the weekend. If I had my way, a Wednesday holiday would mean having the entire week off... although I'd probably fritter the week away being lazy.
