My solution, in this case, was almost exactly what the teacher in the video did, and it involves a lot of raw counting.
ReplyDeleteYou're given what's called a "turtle" shape composed of little blue squares, and you're tasked with finding out what the turtle's perimeter is. So:
First, count the number of squares, and set the side of each little square as s. Turns out there are 19 squares, and the turtle's total area is 171. 171/19 is 9 (the area of each individual square), so we now know that
s = 3.
Next up: we just have to do a raw count of the exposed sides of the turtle to get the perimeter. There are 28 exposed sides, so
3•28 = 84. There's your perimeter.
QED.
